Afrijet, Central Africa’s leading Gabonese airline, has placed a firm order for one ATR 42-600, with an option for another. Regional aircraft manufacturer ATR has firmed the deal, which aims to upgrade Afrijet’s fleet.
The new aircraft will replace their older ATR 42-500, bringing improved passenger comforts to Gabonese regional air travelers. It will join FlyGabon’s existing two ATR 72-600 planes. The first delivery is set for 2025, with the optional aircraft slated for 2026.
Fleet Modernization and Enhanced Passenger Comfort
The new ATR 42-600 is set to replace Afrijet’s aging ATR 42-500, bringing advanced passenger amenities to the skies of Gabon.
This upgrade aligns with the airline’s vision to serve the evolving needs of regional air travelers in Gabonese communities. The aircraft will join FlyGabon‘s existing fleet of two ATR 72-600s, creating a diverse and efficient fleet mix.
ATR plans to deliver the first ATR 42-600 to Afrijet in 2025. If Afrijet exercises its option for the second aircraft, ATR will deliver it in 2026. This will further expand the airline’s capacity to serve regional routes.
FlyGabon’s Mission: Affordable and Accessible Air Travel
FlyGabon, launched in 2024 as Gabon’s national flag carrier, closely ties its ambitions to this aircraft acquisition.
FlyGabon aims to enhance affordable regional mobility across the country, supporting economic growth and taking advantage of ongoing provincial airport restorations.
The ATR 42-600 will play a crucial role in this mission, ensuring that even the most remote Gabonese communities have access to quick, reliable, and cost-effective air travel options.
ATR 42-600: A Perfect Fit for Regional Operations
The ATR 42-600 stands out as an ideal platform for serving remote communities. It boasts the lowest cost per trip in its category, making it an economically viable choice for regional routes.
The aircraft’s environmental credentials are equally impressive, with a 30% reduction in fuel consumption compared to similar-sized regional jets.
This fuel efficiency, combined with its ability to operate in challenging environments, positions the ATR 42-600 as a leader in both environmental performance and operational flexibility.
Leadership Perspectives
Nyl Moret-Mba, Afrijet’s General Manager, spoke of the importance of the acquisition. “The ATR 42-600 represents a significant step forward in FlyGabon’s fleet development.”
“With 46 seats and cutting-edge technologies, we’re confident it’s the perfect aircraft to meet our provincial passenger traffic demands and align with our airport infrastructure.”
Alexis Vidal, ATR’s SVP Commercial, highlighted the partnership’s significance. “We’re honored to support FlyGabon’s launch while continuing our successful collaboration with Afrijet.”
“This agreement underscores our commitment to delivering cost-effective, versatile, and low-emission regional aircraft that contribute to our partners’ growth and enhance affordable regional mobility.”
