airBaltic is set to launch a new route from Vilnius to Düsseldorf, Germany, starting October 31, 2024. This year-round service will operate twice weekly, marking the fourth direct connection between Vilnius and Germany. The new route joins existing flights to Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg.
The Vilnius-Düsseldorf route is part of a risk-sharing agreement between airBaltic and Lithuanian Airports, their third such collaboration.
airBaltic Lithuanian Presence
Set to commence operations on October this year, this year-round service marks a notable expansion of airBaltic’s presence in the Lithuanian capital. The new Vilnius-Düsseldorf route will operate twice weekly, with flights scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays.
This addition brings the total number of direct connections between Vilnius and Germany to four. It will complement existing routes to Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg. The flight duration is estimated at 2 hours and 15 minutes. The short hop service offers a convenient travel option for both business and leisure passengers.
This expansion is the result of a risk-sharing agreement between airBaltic and Lithuanian Airports, representing their third collaborative venture. Such partnerships have proven instrumental in fostering air travel growth and economic ties between the Baltic States and key European destinations.
AirBaltic CEO Comments
Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic, spoke appreciatively about the new route. “Vilnius is one of airBaltic’s home cities, and we are pleased to continue our expansion in the Lithuanian capital.”
“By closely monitoring market trends and passenger demand, we believe that the flights between Vilnius and Düsseldorf will be a strategically important route for Lithuania. Germany is one of the country’s most significant economic partners.”
Gauss further emphasized the airline’s commitment to providing enhanced travel options. “This will be already the fourth airBaltic destination in Germany from Vilnius. It provides our customers with more travel options for business and leisure travels. It thereby increases passenger traffic between both countries.”
Lithuanian Airports Responds
Simonas Bartkus, CEO of Lithuanian Airports, echoed the sentiment and highlighted the broader implications of this new connection. “The launch of this route means that we will have flights to six of Germany’s largest airports and ten regular routes between Lithuania and Germany.”
“It is gratifying that our investment mechanism is successfully contributing to the development of a strategic direction for the country. And also to the preparation for the permanent deployment of the German brigade in our country.”
airBaltic will deploy its modern Airbus A220-300 aircraft on this route, offering passengers a superior flying experience. The A220-300 is known for its wider seats, larger windows, and increased hand luggage space in the cabin. Passengers will have the option to choose between Economy and Business Class services, catering to diverse travel preferences and needs.
Baltic Growth Strategy
This expansion is part of airBaltic’s broader growth strategy in the Baltic region. For the upcoming winter season, the airline plans to launch seven new routes from the Baltic States – four from Riga, two from Vilnius, and one from Tallinn.
This move further solidifies airBaltic’s position as the leading and most preferred airline in the Baltic States.
Currently, airBaltic connects Lithuania with more than 20 direct routes across Europe. Additionally, through its 24 code-share partners, the airline provides convenient one-stop connections to destinations worldwide, enhancing global accessibility for Baltic travelers.
The airline’s extensive network now encompasses over 130 routes from its main hubs in Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius, as well as from Tampere and seasonally from Gran Canaria.
This comprehensive route map offers connections to a wide range of destinations across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caucasus region.
Summary
As air travel continues to recover and grow post-pandemic, airBaltic’s expansion in Vilnius demonstrates the airline’s focus on enhancing regional connectivity and supporting economic ties between the Baltic States and key European markets.
The new Vilnius-Düsseldorf route will play a crucial role in facilitating business relationships, tourism, and cultural exchanges between Lithuania and Germany, further strengthening the bonds between these important European partners.
