An American Airlines Boeing 737-800 departing for Chicago returned to Raleigh-Durham, NC with a cargo door indication problem on 18 October 2024.
American Airlines flight AA1460 was departing Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) for Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

The flight was cleared for takeoff from runway 05R, and had just departed when flight crew reported a technical issue. Furthermore, the operating crew reported receiving an open cargo door indication. As a result, the climb was terminated below 10,000 feet and the aircraft entered a series of holding patterns.
Shortly thereafter, flight crew elected to make a precautionary return to the origin airport. The aircraft landed on runway 05R Raleigh-Durham approximately one hour after its initial departure.
A subsequent FAA report confirmed the after takeoff incident. “American Airlines Flight 1460 returned safely to Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina. It landed around 9:30 a.m. local time on Friday, October 18, after the crew reported a possible open cargo door. The Boeing 737-800 was headed to Chicago O’Hare International Airport.”

Flight data shows that flight AA1460 made its initial departure from Raleigh-Durham at 0839 local time on 18 October.
After takeoff from runway 05R, flight crew terminated the climb at 7500 feet before entering holding procedures. A series of holding patterns were then conducted to the west of the airport before the flight negotiated a return.
The aircraft conducting the AA1460 service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport was a Boeing 737-800, registered N804NN. This is a 15.2-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier American Airlines.
It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in August 2009.
