Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. has announced the addition of three Boeing 747-8 freighters to its fleet. This fleet expansion comes as a response to the increasing need for cross-border e-commerce shipping solutions. It addresses the current surging global demand for dedicated large widebody airfreight capacity.
The new aircraft have been, secured through long-term finance lease agreements with BOC Aviation. The new freighters are now set to enter service towards the end of the third quarter of 2024.
This acquisition also further solidifies Atlas Air’s present position as the world’s largest operator of Boeing 747 freighters.
Demand for Widebody Freighters Rising
Michael Steen, Atlas Air Worldwide’s Chief Executive Officer, spoke about the expansion: “We’re thrilled to grow our widebody fleet with these three 747-8Fs. This follows our earlier acquisition of four 747-400Fs, which we’ve already placed with customers under long-term agreements.”
Steen pointed out the company’s commitment to the 747 freighter platform, highlighting its significant payload capacity and unique nose-loading capability. He noted that these features provide substantial value to their customers.
The CEO also pointed out the persistent strong demand for dedicated large widebody freighters. With a robust pipeline in place, Atlas Air is confident in placing these new planes with customers under favorable long-term agreements.

Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation, commented on the partnership. “Atlas manages the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighter aircraft and is ideally placed to partner with us in operating these latest generation aircraft.”
Townend also highlighted the transaction’s significance, stating that it demonstrates BOC Aviation’s ability to provide capacity solutions to a wide range of airline customers, especially as global airfreight volumes reach record highs.
Boeing 747-8 Capability
The Boeing 747-8 freighter stands out as the most capable, technologically advanced, and environmentally friendly widebody freighter available. It boasts several impressive features:
- Largest load capacity in the market
- 20% increase in payload capacity over the 747-400F
- 25% more capacity than the 777-200LRF
- 16% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the 747-400F
- Unique nose-loading capability
Atlas Air’s current fleet includes 65 Boeing 747 freighter aircraft, comprising:
- 17 747-8Fs
- 39 747-400Fs
- 5 passenger 747-400s
- 4 Large Cargo Freighters (LCFs)
