Avianca B787-8 Diverts to Ponta Delgada After Losing Cabin Pressure

An Avianca Boeing 787-8 operating from Bogotá, Colombia to Madrid diverted to Ponta Delgada, Portugal after losing cabin pressure on 31 October 2024.

Avianca flight AV46, operated by a Boeing 787-8, was en route to Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) from Bogotá El Dorado International Airport (BOG).

While en route in the cruise over the Atlantic Ocean, flight crew reported experiencing a loss of cabin pressure. An emergency descent to 10,000 feet was conducted, and a precautionary diversion to Ponta Delgada was then carried out.

The aircraft landed without further incident on a runway 12 Ponta Delgada airport (PDL), approximately 90 minutes after the diversion was made.

The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to carry out the onwards flight from Ponta Delgada to Madrid on the following day.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that the flight AV46 made an on-time departure from Bogotá El Dorado International Airport. Actual time of departure was logged as 0828 local time on 31 October.

Following its departure, the flight had set course normally, climbing to flight level FL420 (42,000 feet). It then carried out the north-easterly service to Madrid, Spain.

The aircraft was in cruising flight at FL420 when the emergency descent to 10,000 feet was initiated. The flight was located approximately 500 nautical miles to the south of Ponta Delgada on flight plan track.

Flight crew then squawked emergency transponder code 7700 when established at 10,000 feet. The diversion to Ponta Delgada was then carried out at the reduced altitude.

The aircraft conducting the AV46 service to Madrid was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered N785AV. This is a 9.1-year-old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier Avianca.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in October 2015.
