Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has achieved a significant milestone, welcoming 2.39 million passengers in August 2024.
This marks the highest number of travelers for the year so far, showcasing the airport’s growing importance as a key transportation hub in Germany.
Summer Holiday Surge
The surge in passenger numbers coincides with the summer holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg. August saw a 7.7% increase compared to the same month in 2023. In August last year, approximately 2.22 million passengers passed through the airport.
This growth trend is encouraging, although it’s worth noting that pre-pandemic levels have still not yet been fully reached. In August 2019, the now-closed Tegel and Schönefeld airports collectively handled around 3.18 million passengers.
Year-to-Date Performance
From January to August 2024, BER has welcomed a total of 16.58 million passengers. This represents an impressive 11.1% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Over the same period last year, 14.92 million travelers used the airport. The busiest day during this year’s period was August 30, the last Friday of the summer holidays. On this day, a staggering 85,778 passengers passing through BER’s terminals.
Aircraft Movements and Freight
The airport also saw an uptick in aircraft movements, with 16,520 takeoffs and landings recorded in August 2024. This figure is 2.8% higher than August 2023, though still below the approximately 25,000 movements seen at Tegel and Schönefeld in August 2019.
Freight operations at BER have also shown remarkable growth. In August 2024, 4,067 tonnes of air freight were handled. This figure represents a substantial 33.8% increase compared to August 2023.
Even more impressively, this volume is 31.5% higher than the pre-pandemic levels of August 2019, when 3,092 tonnes were processed.
Looking Ahead
As Berlin Brandenburg Airport continues to expand its operations and attract more passengers, it’s clear that the facility is playing an increasingly vital role in Germany’s aviation landscape.
While still working towards pre-pandemic numbers in some areas, the strong growth in both passenger and freight volumes indicates a positive trajectory for BER’s future.
