Braathens A319-100 Suffers Hydraulic Failure on Approach to Rhodes

A Braathens A319-100 arriving from Gothenburg (GOT) reported a hydraulic systems failure on its approach to Rhodes (RHO) on 25 September.

A Braathens Airbus A319-100 arriving from Gothenburg, Sweden reported a hydraulic systems failure during its approach to Rhodes, Greece on 25 September 2024.

Braathens flight BIX52R, an A319-100, had arrived from Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport (GOT) and was conducting an approach to runway 24 Rhodes Airport (RHO).

During the approach, the aircraft suffered a hydraulic systems failure. As a result, flight crew performed an emergency gear extension. The aircraft was able to land safely without further incident on runway 24.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight BIX52R had made a slightly delayed departure out of Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport at 1036 local time. Scheduled departure time for the service was listed as 1000 local time.

The flight had proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL390 (39,000 feet) for the southerly service to Rhodes Island, Greece.

Descent and initial approach procedures were similarly conducted normally, and the technical malfunction was reported during the latter stages of the approach to runway 24. Alternative landing gear extension measures were initiated by the flight crew before the aircraft landed safely.

The aircraft conducting the BIX52R service from Gothenburg was an Airbus A319-100, registered SE-RGC. This is a 16.6-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Braathens International Airways it has been an operational service with the airline since June 2023.

Prior to its present service, the aircraft passed through the hands of Alaska Airlines and Virgin America following its initial delivery from the factory in March 2008.

Braathens International Airwaysis a Swedish charter airline based in Stockholm. It primarily operates flights to southern Europe for tour operators, such as Ving, TUI, and Apollo. The airline’s fleet consists of Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft.
