Brussels Airlines A319: Smoke in Cockpit on Approach to Brussels

A Brussels Airlines A319-100 arriving from Stockholm reported the presence of smoke in the cockpit during its approach to Brussels on 12 October.

A Brussels Airlines Airbus A319-100 arriving from Stockholm, Sweden reported smoke in the cockpit on the approach to Brussels on 12 October 2024.

Brussels Airlines flight SN2298 was conducting an approach to runway 25L Brussels Airport (BRU). During the approach, the flight crew reported the presence of smoke in the cockpit. Flight crew continued the approach and landed without further incident on runway 25L.

According to the online source Aviation Herald, the airline subsequently reported that a device in the aircraft’s avionics bay had overheated. The faulty device was replaced in postflight maintenance and the aircraft was then returned to service approximately 6.5 hours after the landing.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that Brussels Airlines flight SN2298 had made an on-time departure out of Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). Actual time of departure was logged as 0 625 local time on 12 October..

The flight then proceeded normally, setting course and climbing to flight level FL380 (38,000 feet). It then carried out the south-westerly route to Brussels.

Descent and initial approach procedures were similarly conducted normally, and the aircraft was given clearance to land on runway 25L.

Advice of the technical problem was then relayed during the latter stages of the approach. The aircraft conducting the SN2298 service from Stockholm was an Airbus A319-100, registered OO-SSX. This is a 20.3 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Brussels Airlines.

It has been an operational service with the airline since September 2016. Prior to its current service it was operated by US carrier Frontier Airlines from its initial delivery from the factory in July 2004.
