The Calgary Airport Authority has announced that Concourse B at YYC Calgary International Airport will remain closed for at least 18 months. This following a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by the devastating August 5 hailstorm event.
The extent of the damage to Concourse B, particularly to the roof and interior, is significant, and repairs will be extensive.
August Hailstorm Event
The hailstorm, which swept through Calgary on August 5, brought golf-ball-sized hail that pummeled the city. The storm caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.
The storm didn’t spare YYC Calgary International Airport, with Concourse B bearing the brunt of the damage. The hail punctured the roof membrane, allowing heavy rainfall to enter the building and causing extensive water damage.
While the closure of Concourse B may impact some flight schedules, the airport remains open for business. The Authority has successfully accommodated all flights through other parts of the terminal, ensuring minimal disruption to passengers.
YYC Airport Operations Maintained
“Despite the challenges posed by the hailstorm, we have been able to maintain airport operations and ensure the safety and convenience of our passengers,” said Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority. “We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our staff and partners in responding to this emergency.”
The Authority is now working to develop a comprehensive plan to repair the roof and interior of Concourse B. The Airport Authority does not yet know the total cost of repairs, but they expect it to be substantial.
No injuries were reported during the storm, which also caused damage to aircraft, homes, and vehicles in the surrounding area. Passengers are encouraged to contact their airlines for the latest flight information.
Summary
The Authority is working to support affected businesses and will provide updates on the restoration process as it progresses.
“We are committed to ensuring that YYC Calgary International Airport remains a safe and efficient gateway to Calgary and the surrounding region,” said Chris Miles, Chief Operating Officer of the Calgary Airport Authority.
“We will continue to work closely with our partners to minimize the impact of the hailstorm on our operations and the community.”
