In a significant development for India’s aviation sector, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced the opening of its new Terminal 1 on August 17, 2024. This state-of-the-art terminal, a crucial component of the Phase 3A expansion project, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year in March.

The expansion comes as a response to the surging air traffic at Delhi Airport (DEL). Traffic movements have consistently exceeded projections in recent years. DIAL is a consortium led by GMR Airport Infrastructure Limited. It first initiated this ambitious project in 2019 with the aim of future-proofing one of India’s busiest airports.

Phased Transition of Flight Operations

The transition to the new terminal will occur in phases. SpiceJet will lead the shift, moving 13 of its flights to Terminal 1 on the opening day, August 17. IndiGo, one of India’s largest carriers, will follow suit on September 2, transferring 34 flights from Terminals 2 and 3 to the new facility.

DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar gave comment about the development, stating, “The new Terminal 1 will significantly boost our capacity, easing pressure on Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers can expect a smoother travel experience with improved amenities and advanced technology.”

Navigating the New Terminal

To ensure a smooth transition, DIAL has implemented clear guidelines for passengers. SpiceJet travelers will use Entry Gate A on the ground floor, while IndiGo passengers will access the terminal through Gates 5 and 6 on the first floor. All arrivals, regardless of the airline, will be processed on the ground floor.

To assist passengers during this transition period, DIAL has installed comprehensive signage throughout the airport and will deploy additional staff to guide travelers to their correct departure areas.

New Features and Amenities

The new Terminal 1 boasts an impressive array of features designed to enhance the passenger experience. A standout innovation is the Queue-Buster: Mobile Check-in Service, which aims to reduce wait times at check-in counters significantly.

Other technological advancements include an Automated Tray Retrieval System, Individual Carrier System, and Common Usage Self Service kiosks. The terminal also features self-baggage drop facilities and numerous aerobridges to streamline the boarding process.

Beyond the technical improvements, Terminal 1 offers a host of amenities to cater to diverse passenger needs.

These include expanded baggage reclaim carousels, prayer rooms, a dedicated yoga area, quiet zones for those seeking respite, and ample charging stations for electronic devices. Family-friendly features such as baby care rooms and smart washrooms further enhance the terminal’s appeal to all types of travelers.

Improved Connectivity and Access

Recognizing the importance of seamless travel, DIAL has ensured that the new terminal is well-connected to the city. It links directly to Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line, providing easy access for both arriving and departing passengers. Additionally, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) operates regular bus services to and from the terminal.

For inter-terminal transfers, a shuttle bus service connects Terminal 1 with Terminals 2 and 3, facilitating smooth transitions for passengers with connecting flights.

City-side and Airside Enhancements

The improvements extend beyond the terminal building itself. On the city side, passengers will benefit from enhanced forecourt areas and expanded parking facilities.

The pickup and drop-off lanes have been realigned to improve traffic flow, significantly reducing congestion during peak hours.

On the airside, the expansion includes a redesigned apron featuring 82 Code C stands and a dual taxiway system. These improvements will allow for more efficient air traffic management, faster aircraft turnaround times, and enhanced safety measures.

Technological upgrades such as Visual Docking Guidance System (VDGS), Fuel Hydrant System (FHS), Ground Power Units (GPU), and Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) further contribute to the overall efficiency and safety of aircraft handling operations.

Summary

As Delhi Airport’s new Terminal 1 prepares to welcome its first passengers, it stands as a testament to India’s growing aviation sector and its commitment to providing world-class facilities.

With its blend of advanced technology, passenger-centric amenities, and improved operational efficiency, the terminal is set to redefine air travel experiences for millions of passengers in coming years.
