Delta A330-300 Returns to Amsterdam with Landing Gear Retraction Problem

A Delta Air Lines A330-300 departing for Minneapolis returned to Amsterdam when the undercarriage failed to retract after takeoff on 2 October.

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300 departing for Minneapolis, MN returned to Amsterdam after experiencing an undercarriage problem shortly after takeoff on 2 October 2024.

Delta Air Lines flight DL161, an Airbus A330-300 bound for Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport, had conducted a departure from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

During the initial climb after takeoff, flight crew reported that they were unable to retract the landing gear. As a result, it was decided to make a precautionary return to Amsterdam.

The climb was discontinued and a direct return was initiated. The flight landed without incident on runway 06 Amsterdam Schiphol, just over 30 minutes after its initial departure.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that the flight DL161 had made a delayed departure out of Amsterdam. Actual time of departure was logged as 1407 local time on 2 October. Scheduled departure time for the service was listed as 1015 local time. It is understood that the flight was delayed at the terminal prior to pushback due to a technical issue.

The flight had set course and climbed to 6000 feet after takeoff, before flight crew discontinued the climb procedure and initiated a direct return to Amsterdam.

The aircraft conducting the DL161 long haul service to Minneapolis St Paul International Airport (MSP) 300, registered N819NW. This is a 17.3-year-old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines. It has been operational service with the airline since October 2008.

Prior to its current service, the aircraft was operated by US carrier Northwest Airlines.
