Delta B737-900 Returns to Sacramento with Engine Problem

A Delta Air Lines B737-900 departing for Minneapolis made a precautionary return to Sacramento after reporting engine problems on 24 October.

A Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-900 departing for Minneapolis, MN made a precautionary return to Sacramento, CA after reporting an engine problem on 24 October 2024

Delta Air Lines flight DL2229, operated by a Boeing 737-900, and conduct a departure from runway 35R Sacramento International Airport (SMF). The flight was a scheduled service to Minneapolis St Paul International Airport (MSP).

During the initial climb after takeoff, flight crew reported experiencing a problem with one engine. As a result, the climb was discontinued and a direct return to the origin airport was conducted.

The flight subsequently landed without further incident on runway 35R Sacramento International Airport, approximately 30 minutes after its initial departure.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a brief report following the after takeoff incident.

“Delta Air Lines Flight 2229 returned safely to Sacramento International Airport in California around 7 a.m. local time on Thursday, October 24, after the crew reported an engine issue. The Boeing 737-900 was headed to Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport.”

Flight data shows that Delta flight DL2229 had made a departure out of Sacramento at zero 634 local time on 24 October.

After takeoff, the aircraft had climbed to FL180 (18,000 feet) before the climb procedure was terminated. Direct return to the origin airport was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting the DL2229 service to Minneapolis St Paul International Airport was a Boeing 737-900, registered N818DA. This is a 10.6-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines.

It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in March 2014.
