A Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-900 departing for Seattle, WA made a precautionary return to Salt Lake City, UT after suffering an engine problem after takeoff on 8 October 2024.
Delta Air Lines flight DL871, operated by a Boeing 737-900ER, had conducted a departure from runway 34L Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).

During the initial climb after takeoff, the aircraft sustained an engine problem necessitating the shutdown of one of its engines.
Flight crew negotiated an immediate return to the origin airport. The aircraft subsequently landed without further incident on runway 34L approximately 20 minutes after its initial departure.
According to the online source Aviation Herald, two reports to other traffic were issued by Salt Lake City control tower. These referred to the departing Delta Air Lines flight. Tower advised one aircraft of an emergency in progress with an engine on fire. The second advisory to another aircraft notified of a B737 climbing very slowly at about 8000 feet after losing an engine.

The aircraft conducting the DL871 service to Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) was a Boeing 737-900ER, registered N811DZ. This is a 10.9-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines. It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2013.
The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to complete the scheduled service to Seattle.
