An easyJet flight operating from Luqa, Malta to Amsterdam has declared an emergency en route and is presently diverting to Geneva.

easyJet flight U27974, an Airbus A320-200 operating from Luqa Airport (MLA) declared the emergency whilst transiting Swiss airspace en route to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS).

Flight U27974 declared the emergency whilst passing abeam Geneva on flight plan track to Amsterdam. From cruising flight, the aircraft then initiated a descent and has expedited a diversion to Geneva Airport (GVA). The nature of the emergency prompting the diversion is not yet known.

Flight U27974 is now descending towards Geneva (GVA) and is approaching 3,000 feet. Flight crew have maintained the priority transponder code 7700 for the approach and landing.

Having declared an emergency and expedited a diversion earlier this afternoon, easyJet flight U27974 has now landed at Geneva Airport (GVA). The flight was originally scheduled to land at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS).

Flight data shows that easyJet flight U27974 made an on-time departure out of Luqa Airport (MLA) today at 1043 local time.

The flight had set course normally, claiming to flight level FL380 (38,000 feet) for the northerly service to Amsterdam. The aircraft was in cruising flight over Switzerland when flight crew squawked transponder code 7700 at 1048 UTC.

Flight crew then carried out a diversion to nearby Geneva Airport. The aircraft conducting the U27974 service from Malta was an Airbus A320neo, registered OE-LSU. This is a 0.5 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier easyJet Europe.

It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in April 2024. The aircraft is painted in the ‘NEO’ special colour livery.
