This month, Etihad Airways celebrates 20 years of service to India. The UAE’s national carrier launched its first flight to Mumbai on September 26, 2004. This inaugural destination was then followed by New Delhi on December 1 of the same year.
Over the past two decades, Etihad has greatly expanded its Indian network. With the recent addition of Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Jaipur routes, the airline now serves 11 Indian cities.
2024 Sees Further Indian Expansion
2024 has seen Etihad boost its capacity between Abu Dhabi and India. More frequent flights to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Kolkata have added over 50 weekly flights compared to last summer. This increase offers travelers more convenient departure times and improved connection options.
Antonoaldo Neves, Etihad Airways’ CEO, said: “India is crucial to Etihad’s strategy, and we’re thrilled to mark 20 years of service to this amazing country.”
“Since our first Mumbai flight in 2004 – our 8th global destination – we’ve grown to serve 80 cities worldwide. We aim to reach 125 destinations by 2030.”
He added, “This year, we’re proud to offer Indian travelers enhanced connectivity from 11 gateways, making Etihad the top choice for flights to the Middle East, Europe, and North America.”
To kick off the anniversary celebrations, Etihad has introduced Airbus A380 service between Mumbai and Abu Dhabi three times weekly until year-end. This gives Indian travelers a chance to experience the iconic double-decker aircraft.
20% Anniversary Discount
Etihad is offering up to 20% off flights to and from India when booked through the airline website. This sale runs from September 19-21 for travel between October 1, 2024, and March 15, 2025.
Travelers can take advantage of great fares to global destinations like Boston, New York, Paris, and London. Additionally, guests flying through Abu Dhabi can enjoy a complimentary two-night hotel stay via Etihad’s year-round Abu Dhabi Stopover program.
Strong Partnerships in India
Etihad has forged partnerships with brands that resonate with Indian consumers. The airline became the Official Sponsor of the Chennai Super Kings IPL team earlier this year, featuring cricket legend MS Dhoni in TV ads.
This month, Etihad announced its role as Official Front of Shirt sponsor for Mumbai City FC, a top Indian football team. The airline has also partnered with Bollywood star Katrina Kaif as a brand ambassador, showcasing Etihad’s guest experience to millions worldwide.
Local Flavors Take Flight
Etihad now offers locally-curated cuisine on flights departing India. Working with regional chefs and caterers, the airline presents menus reflecting each departure city’s culinary heritage. This initiative not only elevates the airline’s dining experience but also supports local suppliers and economies.
Tailored Services for Indian Travelers
Etihad became the first foreign carrier to launch a Hindi language website, improving accessibility for its guests. Onboard entertainment includes a wide range of Indian content in multiple languages, from Bollywood hits to regional favorites.

Of Etihad’s 10,000+ global employees, about 1,700 are of Indian nationality. These professionals fill various roles across the company, contributing to both Etihad and the broader UAE community.
