Flair Airlines, Canada’s leading ultra-low-cost carrier, marked a further network expansion on 13 September 2024. This month saw the launch of its inaugural non-stop flight from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Guadalajara International Airport (GDL).
This new direct route will now operating up to three times weekly. It offers affordable travel options just in time for the holiday season. More importantly, it aims to strengthen year-round economic, family, and cultural connections between Canada and Mexico.
A First for Flair
Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, Flair Airlines has been rapidly expanding its routes and fleet in recent years.
The airline’s mission is to make travel accessible to all Canadians by offering ultra-low fares. With a growing fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft, Flair has been strategically adding both domestic and international destinations to its network.
Maciej Wilk, interim CEO of Flair Airlines, noted the nonstop service as a first for the Canadian carrier.
“This connection represents enhanced connectivity for Guadalajara, supporting its already impressive and robust economy. We are thrilled to be the only Canadian airline offering non-stop service. This makes it easier for Canadians and Mexicans to explore opportunities for growth, trade, and tourism between these two dynamic regions.”
Guadalajara is known as Mexico’s Silicon Valley and a key hub for innovation and tourism. The region is expected to benefit significantly from this new air link. The direct flight will likely boost trade relations and increase tourism flows between the two countries.
Canadian travellers will now have easier access to Mexico’s second-largest city. It extends access to popular nearby destinations such as Ajijic. This picturesque town on Lake Chapala is known for its large expat community.
A Win for Guadalajara
Martín Zazueta Chávez, director of Guadalajara International Airport underscored the importance of this new route. “With this new route to Toronto, the second to Canada. Guadalajara Airport is now connected to 60 national and international destinations”
“We are excited and ready for the growth that this represents, and to this end, we have invested in the airport infrastructure necessary to provide the best travel experience to our passengers.”
Flair Airlines’ expansion into Mexico aligns with its strategy to offer Canadians affordable escape options during the cold winter months. The airline has been steadily increasing its presence in sun destinations. Guadalajara now joins other Mexican cities like Cancun and Los Cabos in Flair’s network.
Celebration of Inaugural Flight
Events in both Toronto and Guadalajara celebrated the inaugural flight. Notable speakers at these events included José Ángel Martínez Sánchez, Network Director at Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP); Vanessa Pérez Lamas, Jalisco’s Tourism Minister; Gustavo Staufert Buclon, CEO of the Guadalajara Visitors and Convention Bureau; and Frank Le, Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner for Canada in Guadalajara.
Kim Bowie, director of communications at Flair Airlines, shared her impressions of the launch. “The atmosphere at the Guadalajara International Airport was electric, and we felt incredible warmth from both passengers and our partners in Guadalajara. This day was made possible by the wonderful collaboration between our teams and local stakeholders, and we’re excited for what’s to come.”
