Spanish flag carrier Iberia has made history by becoming the launch operator of the Airbus A321XLR, the world’s newest single-aisle aircraft.
This milestone marks a significant step forward in aviation, as the A321XLR is poised to redefine long-haul travel.
Powered by efficient CFM LEAP-1A engines, the aircraft will initially serve regional routes across Europe. The Spanish airline will then deploy the extended range aircraft on transatlantic flights. The carrier will fly the new aircraft from Madrid to Boston for its inaugural journey in November.
Iberia & Airbus Leadership Comments
Iberia CEO Marco Sansavini expressed the airline’s pride in being the launch customer for the A321XLR. “The A321XLR will allow us to reach new destinations, operating transoceanic routes and doing so in a more efficient way.”
Airbus CEO Christian Scherer shared this enthusiasm, highlighting the A321XLR’s role in expanding air connectivity and driving innovation. “Five years in the making, the newest member of the Airbus family is all set to join its first operator, Iberia,” Scherer said.
“It is another proud “first” for all of us at Airbus in our constant quest to innovate and bring value to our customers. We are pleased to share this special moment with a special customer: gracias y felicidades Iberia.”
A321XLR: Cabin and Capabilities
The A321XLR offers a luxurious travel experience with its spacious cabin, featuring 182 seats in a two-class configuration.
Business class passengers can enjoy lie-flat seats with direct aisle access, ensuring comfort and privacy throughout the flight. The aircraft’s XL bins provide ample storage space for luggage, while the latest lighting system creates a serene atmosphere.

The aircraft’s fuel efficiency and reduced emissions contribute to a more sustainable future for aviation.
Looking Ahead
Airbus has already secured over 500 orders for the A321XLR, demonstrating strong industry demand for this innovative aircraft. The first A321XLR successfully completed its maiden flight in June 2022, followed by rigorous testing to ensure its airworthiness.
The manufacturer has set ambitious targets and is is committed to a sustainable future. Airbus has designed the A321XLR to be compatible with Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and aims to make all its aircraft 100% SAF-capable by 2030.
This commitment to reducing carbon emissions aligns with the industry’s efforts to create a more environmentally friendly aviation sector.
As Iberia pioneers the use of the A321XLR, it heralds a new standard for long-haul travel. With its exceptional performance, passenger comfort, and environmental benefits, the single-aisle A321XLR is now set to revolutionize the aviation industry.
