Jetstar is embarking on its largest-ever expansion in Perth, marking a significant milestone in Western Australia’s aviation landscape. This week, the airline introduces its third new Perth-Asia route, inaugurates a fresh aircraft and pilot base, and relocates its domestic flights to Terminal 2.

This multifaceted expansion raises Jetstar’s profile in the Western Australian market and its strategic positioning in the Asia-Pacific region.

New Asian Connections

Building on the recently launched Perth-Singapore and Perth-Phuket services, Jetstar will commence flights between Perth and Bangkok from September 6, 2024.

Operating up to four times weekly, this new route completes a trio of services linking Western Australia’s capital with Asia. These additions create over 300,000 annual low-fare seats, enhancing travel options for West Australians and boosting tourism to the state.

Passengers can now access Jetstar Asia’s network of 17 destinations, including Colombo and Okinawa, with just one stop in Singapore. This expansion follows Jetstar’s successful introduction of budget flights connecting Sydney-Busselton Margaret River and Singapore-Broome earlier this year.

The increased connectivity is expected to stimulate both leisure and business travel. It will fostering stronger economic ties between Western Australia and key Asian markets.

New Perth Base

To support this growth, Jetstar has opened a new Perth base. This accommodates up to 60 pilots and four state-of-the-art Airbus A321neo LR aircraft.

These Perth-based planes are part of a larger fleet expansion, with 38 new A321neo LR and XLR aircraft set to join Jetstar by 2029. The recent arrival of the 15th new LR aircraft signals the airline’s entry into an era of fleet renewal, network expansion, and improved reliability.

The A321neo LR aircraft boast enhanced fuel efficiency and extended range capabilities, allowing Jetstar to explore new route possibilities from Perth in the future.

This investment in modern aircraft not only improves the airline’s operational efficiency but also reduces its environmental footprint, aligning with growing demands for more sustainable air travel options.

Terminal Relocation

From today, all Jetstar Perth flights will operate from the Airport Central precinct. Domestic services have moved from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2, adjacent to the international Terminal 1.

This change allows passengers to walk between domestic and international services, eliminating the need for shuttle buses and facilitating easier connections to central Perth via the underground airport train station.

The terminal relocation is part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and enhance the passenger experience at Perth Airport. It reflects the growing importance of Perth as a hub for both domestic and international travel, particularly for connections between Australia and Asia.

Leadership Comments

Jetstar Group CEO Stephanie Tully emphasized the airline’s westward focus for future growth. “We’re introducing over 300,000 new low-fare seats annually with these Perth-Asia routes. Given the popularity of our Perth-Bali service, we’re confident these new flights will be equally successful. Our Perth base will enable further network expansion in Western Australia.”

Tully also highlighted the potential for job creation and economic stimulation in the region. She noted that the expansion goes beyond just adding new routes. “This investment in Perth demonstrates our long-term commitment to Western Australia and our belief in its potential as a key player in the Asia-Pacific aviation market,” she added.

WA Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti welcomed the expansion. She highlighted its potential to boost tourism and strengthen Perth’s position as Australia’s Western Gateway. She noted the expected increase in visitors from across Asia and the economic benefits of Jetstar’s expanded operations.

Saffioti emphasized the state government’s support for aviation growth. “This expansion aligns perfectly with our strategy to diversify Western Australia’s economy. It will establish Perth as a major international gateway.”

Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters expressed excitement about Jetstar’s international network growth. He spoke of its commitment to Western Australia through new aircraft and the pilot base. He also pointed out the improved transit experience for passengers due to the terminal relocation.

Waters elaborated on the airport’s ongoing development plans. “Jetstar’s expansion is a key component of our vision to transform Perth Airport into a world-class aviation hub. We’re continuously investing in infrastructure and technology to support airlines like Jetstar in their growth ambitions.”
