Lion Air Passenger Dies After Fall From Airstairs in Madinah

A passenger disembarking a Lion Air flight from Surabaya, Indonesia has died after falling from air stairs in Madinah, Saudi Arabia on 29 October 2024..

Lion Air flight JT74, operated by an Airbus A330-300, had arrived at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) in Madinah. Arriving from Surabaya Juanda International Airport, the flight had conducted a normal landing and had taxied to the apron hardstanding area.

On arriving at the apron, the aircraft was to be disembarked via air stairs. The Saudi National Transport Safety Center (NTSC) released a brief statement following the accident. It confirmed that a woman passenger disembarking the aircraft sustained serious injuries after falling from the stairs.

The woman was then transferred to hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

“Initial information indicated that a passenger fell from the stairs while getting off the plane. This resulted in her death later after she was transferred to the hospital.”

Flight data shows that Lion Air flight JY74 had originally departed from Surabaya Juanda International Airport at 1505 local time on 28 October.

The flight and then proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL380 for the westerly service to Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

The aircraft conducting the JY74 service from Surabaya was an Airbus A330-300, registered PK-LEH. This is an 8.9-year-old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Lion Air. It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2015.

The NTSC dispatched investigators to the site following the event, and have now opened an investigation into the accident.
