Lufthansa A319-100 Diverts to Munich After Birdstrike Damage

A Lufthansa A319-100 diverted to Munich after multiple birdstrikes during its approach to Salzburg caused unreliable airspeed indications on 19 October.

A Lufthansa Airbus A319-100 conducting an arrival into Salzburg, Austria diverted to Munich after sustaining birdstrike damage during the approach on 19 October 2024.

Lufthansa flight LH1108, operated by an Airbus A319-100 from Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA), was conducting an arrival to Salzburg Airport (SZG).

The flight had been cleared for an ILS approach to runway 15 Salzburg Airport, and was established on final approach.

During the final leg of the instrument approach, flight crew reported multiple bird strikes on the aircraft. This resulted in unreliable indications on the airspeed indicator (ASI). The flight crew then carried out a missed approach procedure and elected to divert to Munich.

According to the online source Aviation Herald, ATC indicated that the aircraft’s transponder was not showing altitude information during the subsequent diversion.

Flight crew subsequently reported that they had no airspeed indications and were flying the aircraft manually and maintaining 10,000 feet altitude.

The aircraft was able to land safely without further incident on runway 26R Munich International Airport (MUC).

Available flight data shows that the flight LH1108 had made a delayed departure out of Frankfurt am Main Airport on 19 October. Actual time of departure was logged as 2226 local time. Scheduled departure time for the service was listed as 2130 local time.

Following its departure, the flight had proceeded normally en route to Salzburg Airport. The descent was made normally for the destination, and the aircraft was cleared for an instrument approach.

The missed approach procedure was being conducted from the final approach leg of the runway 15 ILS approach.

The aircraft conducting the LH1108 service from Frankfurt was an Airbus A319-100, registered D-AIBA. This is a 14.9 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the national carrier Lufthansa. It has been operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2009.
