Malta Air B737 MAX 8 Suffers Bird Strike on Departure From Cologne

Some aircraft debris was discovered during a runway inspection at Cologne after a departing Malta Air B737 MAX 8 reported a possible birdstrike on 27 September.

A Malta Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 departing for Palma de Mallorca, Spain suffered a bird strike during the climb out of Cologne on 27 September 2024.

Malta Air flight FR7208, operated on behalf of Ryanair, had conducted a departure from runway 13L Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN). During the climb, flight crew reported experiencing a possible birdstrike after takeoff.

The flight continued its climb to cruising level and proceeded on flight plan track to the destination Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI).

According to the online source Aviation Herald, a runway inspection was conducted at Cologne Bonn after flight crew reported the possible birdstrike incident. The subsequent inspection revealed the presence of bird remains and some aircraft parts on the departure runway.

The flight was able to continue under normal operations and landed without incident on a runway 24L Palma de Mallorca Airport.

Flight data shows that the flight had made an on-time departure out of Cologne at 0746 local time on 27 September.

Following the after takeoff report, flight crew continued the climb to cruising level FL390 (39,000 feet). The scheduled service then proceeded on flight plan track for the southerly service to Mallorca. Descend and approach procedures were conducted normally at the planned destination.

The aircraft conducting the FR7208 service on behalf of Ryanair was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, registered 9H-VVA. This is a 2.4 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Malta Air. It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in July 2022.

Malta Air is a subsidiary of Ryanair. It was established in 2019 to operate flights on behalf of Ryanair, particularly in Malta and other European countries. While Malta Air has its own branding and registration, it effectively functions as an extension of Ryanair’s operations, sharing many of the same policies, routes, and aircraft.
