NORRA ATR-72 Suffers Heavy Landing and Tail Strike in Gothenburg

A NORRA ATR-72 operating a service from Helsinki suffered a hard handing and a tail strike on landing at Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport on 10 August.

A Nordic Regional Airlines (NORRA) ATR-72 operating a service from Helsinki, Finland to Gothenburg, Sweden suffered a tail strike following a hard landing on 10 August 2024.

NORRA flight AY865, an ATR-72 performing the flight from Helsinki Airport (HEL) had conducted on arrival and approach to RWY21 Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport (GOT).

On landing, the aircraft initially bounced from a hard touchdown. On the second touchdown, the aircraft suffered a tail strike when the aircraft’s tail contacted the runway surface.

The aircraft was able to vacate the active runway and taxi to the apron hard standing area, however it sustained substantial damage as a result of the tail strike.

According to the online source the Aviation Herald, the aircraft remained on the ground that Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport until 16 August. It was then repositioned to Helsinki, with the flight remaining below 10,000 feet as a standard precaution.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight AY865 had made the delayed departure out of Helsinki airport at 1727 local time on 10 August. Scheduled departure time for the rotation was listed as 1615 local time.

The flight then proceeded normally, setting course and climbing to flight level FL160 (16,000 feet) for the regional service to Sweden.

Let down and approach procedures were similarly conducted normally. The aircraft then suffered an initial heavy landing and bounced from its initial touchdown. This was followed by the tail strike on the second touchdown on RWY21 Gothenburg GOT. Winds were gusting to 27KT at the time of landing.

The aircraft conducting the AY865 service from Helsinki was an ATR-72-212A, registered OH-ATK. This is a 15.6 year old regional aircraft belonging to the carrier Finnair. It is operated on behalf of the airline by NORRA – Nordic Regional Airlines.

The aircraft has been in service with the carrier since June 2015.
