Perth Airport Breaks Passenger Record, Fueling Western Australia’s Aviation Boom

Perth Airport has broken its annual passenger record in the 2024 fiscal year, highlighting a strong resurgence in WA state aviation sector.

In a landmark achievement for Western Australia’s aviation sector, Perth Airport has soared to new heights, breaking its annual passenger record in the 2024 fiscal year.

For the first time in its history, the airport welcomed an astounding 16.1 million travellers. This easily surpasses the previous record of 14.9 million set a decade earlier in 2014.

This remarkable feat underscores the extraordinary efforts made to attract airlines to Western Australia, providing crucial support to the state’s vital tourism, resource, and export sectors.

Resurgence in Post-Covid Era

Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters expressed his enthusiasm about this milestone, stating, “Our rebound from the Covid pandemic has been nothing short of amazing.”

“We have added more than ten million passengers since FY21, easily breaking a record that has stood for a decade.”

The significance of this achievement becomes even more apparent when considering the challenges faced by the aviation industry in recent years.

The global pandemic brought air travel to a near standstill, with airports worldwide experiencing unprecedented declines in passenger numbers.

Perth Airport’s ability to not only recover but surpass pre-pandemic levels highlights its resilience and the appeal of Western Australia as a destination for both business and leisure travelers.

Waters anticipates that this growth trajectory will continue, citing increasing airline confidence in the Western Australian market.

This optimism is reflected in the airport’s ambitious plans for expansion and improvement.

Growth Fuelling Infrastructure Development

To meet the growing demand and prepare for future increases in passenger traffic, Perth Airport is embarking on a massive $5 billion infrastructure investment plan.

This decade-long project aims to transform the airport into a world-class facility capable of handling increased capacity while providing an enhanced travel experience for passengers.

Key components of this expansive plan include:

  • Expansion of the international terminal to accommodate more flights and passengers
  • Construction of new domestic terminal facilities to improve efficiency and passenger comfort
  • Development of a parallel runway to increase the airport’s operational capacity
  • Addition of two multi-storey carparks to ease parking congestion
  • Construction of the airport’s first hotel, offering convenient accommodation for travelers

“This will deliver one airport for the people of Western Australia which will host all flight services in a central location, giving passengers a seamless, world-class travel experience,” Waters explained.

Current Terminal Improvements

In addition to these long-term projects, Perth Airport is also implementing immediate improvements to enhance the passenger experience.

Work is set to begin on the first multi-storey carpark outside Terminal 1. This directly addresses the growing need for convenient parking options.

Terminal 2 will see expansions, including more departure gates and seating areas to accommodate increasing passenger numbers.

The airport is also planning to add more car parks and make changes to the road network. This will be carried out around Terminal 2 to improve traffic flow along the forecourt.

These developments promise significant benefits for travelers and the broader Western Australian community. However, Waters acknowledges that the construction process may cause some inconvenience.

“Unfortunately, with all of this work, there will be some pain for passengers during construction,” he said.

“We ask that passengers understand that this is a significant investment which will transform Perth Airport and take us into the future.”

Perth Airport: Gateway to Western Australia

Perth Airport serves as the primary international and domestic air hub for Western Australia.

It is located approximately 10 kilometres east of Perth’s central business district. The capital city airport plays a crucial role in connecting the state to the rest of Australia and the world.

The airport’s history dates back to the 1940s, with significant expansions and upgrades occurring over the decades to meet the growing needs of air travel.

Today, it operates with four terminals, handling a mix of international, domestic, and regional flights.

As the fourth busiest airport in Australia by passenger traffic, Perth Airport is a vital economic driver for the state.

It facilitates not only tourism but also supports Western Australia’s thriving mining and resources sector, enabling efficient business travel and cargo transport.

The airport’s importance extends beyond its role as a transport hub. It is a major employer in the region and contributes significantly to the local economy.

It achieves this through direct and indirect employment, as well as facilitating trade and commerce.

With its record-breaking passenger numbers and ambitious expansion plans, Perth Airport is positioning itself as a key player in Western Australia’s economic future.

As the gateway to this vast and diverse state, the airport’s growth and development will continue to play a crucial role in shaping Western Australia’s connections to the rest of the country and the world.
