Piedmont Airlines ERJ-145 Returns to Philadelphia After Engine Failure

A Piedmont Airlines ERJ-145 departing to Cincinnati, KY made a precautionary return to Philadelphia following an engine failure on 31 October.

A Piedmont Airlines Embraer ERJ-145 departing to Cincinnati, KY made a precautionary return to Philadelphia, PA following an engine failure on 31 October 2024.

Piedmont Airlines flight AA5928, operated by an Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of American Airlines, was conducting a departure from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).

The aircraft was conducting a scheduled service to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).

Shortly after takeoff from runway 27R Philadelphia, flight crew reported the failure of the aircraft’s left hand engine. The climb was terminated and a direct return to the original airport was conducted.

The flight landed without further incident on a runway 27L, approximately 15 minutes after its initial departure.

A subsequent report issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the after takeoff incident.

“Piedmont Airlines Flight 5928 returned safely to Philadelphia International Airport around 11 a.m. local time on Thursday, Oct. 31. The crew reported an engine issue shortly after takeoff. The Embraer E145 was headed to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. The FAA will investigate.”

The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to complete the scheduled service to Cincinnati.

Flight data shows that the flight AA5928 had conducted a departure from Philadelphia International Airport at 1048 local time on 31 October.

Following the takeoff from runway 27R, flight crew terminated the climb procedure at 5000 feet. A direct return to the original airport was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting the AA5928 service to Cincinnati was an Embraer ERJ-145, registered N650AE. This is a 23.7-year-old regional jet owned by American Eagle and operated by Piedmont Airlines.

It has been operational service with the carrier since its initial delivery from the factory in April 2001.
