For the first time ever, Qantas has launched direct flights from Brisbane to Port Vila, Vanuatu’s picturesque capital.
The maiden voyage, QF159, operated by a Boeing 737-800, took off on 10 September at full capacity, carrying a mix of holidaymakers and business travelers on the 3-hour Pacific flight.
Qantas and Jetstar Operations
This new route offers three weekly flights from Queensland. Starting December 12, 2024, Jetstar will also provide up to four weekly flights from Sydney to Port Vila.
Together, these services will create over 150,000 new seats annually between Australia and Vanuatu. This will make it easier than ever for Australians to explore Vanuatu’s stunning beaches, rich culture, and unique adventures.
These flights aim to boost tourism and strengthen economic ties between the two countries. They’ll also support the broader Pacific region’s tourism economy by encouraging more Australian visitors to the island nation.
Port Vila Becomes 4th International Route
Port Vila is one of four new international routes Qantas has launched from Queensland’s capital city Brisbane within a year. It follows the introduction of flights to Wellington and Honiara in October 2023. A service from Brisbane to Manila set to launch in late October 2024. This will add another 100,000 seats in capacity between Australia and the Philippines yearly.
Cam Wallace, Qantas Group CEO International, spoke on behalf of the airline about the new route. “We’re thrilled to offer direct flights between Brisbane and Port Vila.”
“This route will enhance connectivity between Australia and the South Pacific, creating new opportunities for leisure and business travel. Vanuatu’s lush landscapes and crystal-blue waters make it a truly remarkable destination.”
Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan Graaff added further comment. “This new Qantas route to Port Vila solidifies Brisbane Airport’s role as Australia’s Pacific hub. It offers Queenslanders an easy escape to paradise and provides direct access for Vanuatu natives living in Queensland to visit home and family.”
Adela Issachar Aru, Vanuatu Tourism Office CEO, also welcomed the new service. “The launch of Qantas’ inaugural flight from Brisbane to Port Vila is a major milestone for Vanuatu’s tourism industry. Vanuatu offers an unforgettable escape with stunning landscapes, rich kastom, and adventure across our 83 islands.”
