Qatar Airways 787-8 Diverts to Karachi After Engine Shutdown

A Qatar Airways Boeing 787-8 operating from Doha to Angeles, Philippines diverted to Karachi following an engine problem on 31 August 2024.

Qatar Airways flight QR926, a Boeing 787-8 en route from Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) experienced an engine problem whilst in cruising flight.

Flight crew initiated a diversion to nearby Karachi Jinnah International Airport and commenced an engine out driftdown procedure.

The aircraft subsequently landed without further incident at Jinnah International Airport (KHI).

Flight Details


Flight data shows that Qatar Airways flight QR926 made a departure from Hamad International Airport at oh 200 local time on 31 August. The flight then set course normally for the Philippines, climbing to flight level FL390 (39,000 feet) for the long haul service.

The aircraft was en route to the north-west of Karachi, Pakistan when the diversion and driftdown descent procedure was initiated.

A driftdown procedure is a controlled descent technique employed by commercial aircraft pilots when an engine fails. It’s designed to safely lower the aircraft’s altitude to a level where the remaining engine(s) can maintain sufficient power. This enables it to either reach an alternate airport or continue with the planned flight.

The aircraft conducting the QR926 service to Angeles was a Boeing 787-8, registered A7-BCZ. This is an 8.7 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Qatar Airways. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in February 2016.

The extent of the engine problem is not known. A replacement aircraft was mustered and repositioned to Karachi to conduct the onwards scheduled service.
