A Ryanair Boeing 737-800 arriving from Bologna, Italy suffered multiple bird strikes on landing in Manchester on 7 October 2024.
Ryanair flight FR2241, operated by the Boeing 737-800, was conducting an arrival from Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ). The aircraft had received an ATC clearance to land on runway 23R Manchester Airport (MAN).

During the landing the aircraft reportedly struck a number of birds. It was able to continue landing, before exiting the active runway and taxiing to the apron hardstanding.
The runway was subsequently closed for approximately 30 minutes to allow for inspection and cleaning to take place.
Several inbound flights were diverted to nearby Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) and Birmingham Airport (BHX) as a result of the closure.
Flight data shows that flight FR2241 had made an on-time departure from Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport at 1746 local time on 7 October.
The flight and then proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL360 (36,000 feet) for the service to Manchester. Descent and approach procedures were similarly conducted normally. The birdstrike reportedly took place during the landing.
The aircraft conducting the FR2241 service from Bologna was a Boeing 737-800, registered 9H-QDS. This is a 7.7-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Malta Air. It has been an operational service with parent carrier Ryanair since its initial delivery from the factory in February 2017. The aircraft was deployed to the Malta Air subsidiary in February 2020.
