Scandinavian carrier SAS made history again by joining The Aviation Challenge (TAC) for the first time, re-visiting its historic Polar Route.
The airline operated a special flight from Copenhagen (CPH) to Los Angeles (LAX) on Thursday, October 24, departing at 12:10 PM local time.
The choice of route is notable, as it recreates SAS’ historic Polar Route, which was first operated seventy years ago by the airline. The flight to Los Angeles from Copenhagen was routed via the North Pole.
Pioneering Spirit: From Polar Routes to Green Aviation
SAS has consistently led the way in sustainable aviation practices. The Scandinavian airline has adopted fleet modernization, resource optimization, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) uptake.
With a proactive stance, the airline keeps finding innovative ways to reduce its environmental impact. With its eyes set on achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, SAS continues pushing for meaningful industry changes.
This year’s challenge holds special significance as it marks 70 years since SAS first conquered the North Pole route between Copenhagen and Los Angeles in 1954.
This groundbreaking achievement wasn’t just about setting records – it showcased how innovation could improve efficiency.
By shortening the distance between Europe and North America, the polar route reduced both fuel consumption and emissions. The original reason for the routes development really embodies the same spirit that drives today’s sustainability efforts.
The SkyTeam Aviation Challenge
The Aviation Challenge (TAC) brings together SkyTeam alliance members annually for specially designed flights that highlight operational excellence and sustainable practices. The event serves as a platform for sharing innovative solutions that could transform aviation’s environmental impact.
By participating in TAC, SAS reinforces its broader commitment to aviation sustainability. From reducing in-flight food waste to optimizing routes with modern aircraft, and developing partnerships for SAF and electric aircraft, SAS actively drives industry transformation.
SAS Leadership Perspective
Mads Brandstrup Nielsen, SAS Senior Vice President of Communication and Public Affairs, explains: “Our Copenhagen to Los Angeles flight demonstrates how we’re maximizing operational efficiency to minimize environmental impact.”
“TAC participation reflects our deeper commitment to reshaping aviation’s future. Building on our innovative heritage while focusing on tomorrow’s challenges, SAS leads the charge for change.”
Building a Sustainable Future
SAS’s TAC participation showcases more than just technical innovations – it represents a comprehensive strategy for sustainable aviation.
The challenge brings together various teams, from flight operations to maintenance, highlighting SAS’s integrated approach.
This collaborative effort, combined with decades of environmental commitment, strengthens SAS’s position as an industry leader in sustainable transformation.
With its sights set on net-zero emissions by 2050, SAS continues developing innovations that will shape aviation’s sustainable future. Today’s achievements lay the groundwork for tomorrow’s environmentally responsible air travel.
