Scandinavian carrier SAS has officially joined the SkyTeam global airline alliance. The move marks a new step for the airline, after its recent restructuring and exit from Chapter 11 proceedings. This partnership elevates SkyTeam’s network and offers SAS customers seamless connectivity to over 1,060 destinations worldwide.

One of the most immediate benefits for SAS customers is the expanded travel options now available. The new alliance offers access to new destinations in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Travelers with the Scandinavian airline can now benefit from a wider range of global destinations.

Codeshare agreements with Air France-KLM are already in place, and more partnerships with other SkyTeam members are expected to follow.

SkyTeam and SAS Comments

SkyTeam Chairman, Andres Conesa, expressed support for SAS joining the alliance, stating, “SAS shares our vision of delivering a high-quality travel experience.” He emphasized that the partnership would open up exciting new opportunities for both customers and the alliance as a whole.

SAS President and CEO, Anko van der Werff, highlighted the positive impact of the partnership on SAS customers. He explained that the alliance would provide expanded global reach, collaboration with like-minded airlines, and enhanced travel experiences. Van der Werff also emphasized the company’s commitment to connecting the world to Scandinavia and elevating the travel experience for its passengers.

SkyTeam CEO, Patrick Roux, emphasized the alliance’s dedication to providing exceptional value to customers through strong collaboration. He stated that the goal of SkyTeam is to be the most integrated and seamless alliance in the industry.

Roux expressed his belief in the power of teamwork to create a smooth and cohesive travel experience and welcomed SAS as a new member.

SAS Member Benefits

SAS EuroBonus members will now benefit from the expanded partnership. They can earn and redeem points across most SkyTeam airlines, making it easier to travel and accumulate rewards. Gold and Diamond members will enjoy SkyPriority services and access to lounges worldwide, providing a more comfortable and convenient travel experience.

Silver members will be recognized as SkyTeam Elite, granting them enhanced services across the SkyTeam network. Gold and Diamond members will enjoy the elevated status of Elite Plus, offering even more exclusive benefits.

Summary

With SAS’s membership, SkyTeam becomes the only airline alliance serving both the southernmost and northernmost commercial airports: Ushuaia in Argentina and Svalbard in Norway.

This further strengthens the alliance’s reach across key global markets and provides improved access to Scandinavian hubs, such as Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo.

The partnership between SAS and SkyTeam offers significant benefits for both the airlines and their customers. SAS customers can now enjoy expanded travel options, seamless connectivity, and enhanced services.

With SAS having just successfully implemented a robust reformation, SkyTeam benefits from the addition of a strong and customer-focused airline to its network.
