A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 operating a service from Phoenix, AZ to San Francisco, CA diverted to Ontario, CA after reporting the presence of smoke on board on 7 September 2024.

Southwest Airlines flight WN984, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, was en route in the cruise when the incident was reported.

Flight crew reported the presence of smoke on board the aircraft as the flight transited to the north-east of Ontario. As a result the operating crew elected to make a precautionary diversion to nearby Ontario International Airport (ONT).

According to the online source Aviation Herald, flight crew advised ATC that the smoke had dissipated as the aircraft descended through 10,000 feet during the diversion.

The flight was able to land without incident at Ontario International Airport, and the aircraft was brought to a stop on the runway.

It then remained on the runway briefly before taxiing to the apron hardstanding area. A replacement aircraft was mustered by the airline to complete the scheduled service to San Francisco.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight WN984 had departed from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at 1931 local time. The flight then set course normally, climbing to flight level FL380 (38,000 feet). It then carried out the westerly service to San Francisco.

The aircraft then diverted from the cruise. This took place as it passed to the north-east of Ontario whilst en route to the destination.

Aircraft conducting the WN984 service from Phoenix was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, registered N1807U. This is a 4.8-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Southwest Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in November 2022.
