A SWISS Airbus A320-200 operating a service from Zürich, Switzerland to Athens, Greece returned to Athens with an engine problem on 12 September 2024.
SWISS flight LX1842, an Airbus A320-200 bound for Athens International Airport (ATH) had departed from Zürich Airport and was en route in Italian airspace.

The flight crew reported a problem with the right-hand engine during the cruise. According to the online source Aviation Herald, the aircraft had experienced an engine compressor stall but was running normally again.
With the flight approximately 149 nautical miles south-east of Zürich on track to Athens, flight crew elected to make a precautionary return to the origin airport.
The aircraft subsequently made an overweight landing without incident approximately one hour after its initial departure.

Flight data shows that flight LX1842 had made an on-time departure out of Zürich airport (ZRH) at 2122 local time. The flight had been set course normally, climbing to flight level FL350 (35,000 feet) for the south-easterly service to Athens.
The aircraft subsequently initiated a direct return to the origin airport, before conducting an overweight landing on RWY16.
The aircraft conducting the LX1842 service to Athens was an Airbus A320-200, registered HB-IJP. This is a 27.5-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Swiss International Airlines (SWISS).
It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in May 1997. SWISS is the flag carrier of Switzerland, and operates from the 2 primary hubs Zürich and Geneva.
