Total B737-400 Freighter Destroyed by Fire in São Paulo Emergency Landing

A Total Linhas Aéreas Boeing 737-400 (SF) was destroyed by fire after making an emergency landing in São Paulo, Brazil on 9 November.

A Total Linhas Aéreas Boeing 737-400 (SF) was destroyed by fire after making an emergency landing in São Paulo, Brazil on 9 November 2024.

Total flight TTL5682, operated by a Boeing 737-400 freighter, was conducting an arrival at São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU).

The aircraft was carrying out a scheduled cargo service from Vitória International Airport (VIX). During the approach to runway 28L, flight crew declared an emergency.

The approach was continued and the aircraft was brought to a stop on the active runway. According to local news sources, the tower controller reporting seeing flames coming from the stationary aircraft.

The freighter aircraft was attended by ground firefighting and emergency vehicles. Flight crew had shutdown both engines and remained aboard the aircraft as firefighters fought the flames.

Firefighters also cut into the fuselage to permit access to fire affected areas.

The aircraft operating crew was eventually able to escape the aircraft via the emergency exit on the flight deck upper roof. The fire was eventually brought under control by ground firefighting assets, and the aircraft was subsequently towed from the runway.

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire broke out in a cargo compartment during the approach, prompting the emergency declaration. The cause of the fire is still to be ascertained. The Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa) will now conduct an investigation into the accident.

No injuries were reported as a result of the ground fire.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that Total flight TTL5682 had departed from Vitória International Airport at 2335 local time on 8 November. The flight had been set course normally for São Paulo, climbing to flight level FL360 for the south-westerly regional service.

On arrival, the flight was cleared for a landing on runway 28L, before the emergency declaration was made during the approach phase.

The aircraft conducting the TTL5682 scheduled cargo service was a Boeing 737-400 (SF), registered PS-TLB. This is a 30.6 year old converted freighter aircraft belonging to the carrier Total Linhas Aéreas.

It has been an operational service with the airline since May 2024.
