A United Airlines Boeing 767-300 operating from Newark, NJ to Geneva, Switzerland diverted to St John’s, Canada due to the presence of smoke on board on 23 September 2024.
United Airlines flight UA956, a Boeing 767-300 outbound from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) reported the presence of smoke on board during cruising flight.

The aircraft was on the flight plan track over the Atlantic to the east of St John’s when the issue was reported.
Flight crew elected to make a precautionary diversion to St John’s International Airport (YYT). The aircraft was descended to a lower cruising level and set a direct course for the diversion airport.
The flight was able to land without incident at St John’s International Airport approximately one hour after making the diversion.

Flight data shows that flight UA956 made and on time departure out of Newark (EWR) at 1732 local time on 23 September. The flight had set course normally, climbing to flight level FL350 (35,000 feet). It then carried out the transatlantic service to Geneva Airport (GVA).
The diversion was then made approximately 200 nautical miles east of St John’s Canada. From that point, the aircraft was descended to FL320.
A replacement aircraft was mustered by the airline. It was deployed to St John’s to collect passengers and completely onwards scheduled service to Switzerland.
The aircraft conducting the UA956 service from Newark was a Boeing 767-300, registered N663UA. This is a 31.1 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier United Airlines. It has been an operational service with since its initial delivery from the factory in August 1993.
