A United Airlines Boeing 787-10 operating a service from Chicago to Paris has declared an emergency enroute and is diverting to Reykjavik.
United Airlines flight UA987 declared a general emergency, squawking transponder code 7700 before initiating a diversion to Reykjavik.
Flight UA987 declared the emergency whilst in the cruise during the transatlantic crossing, and is now expediting a direct diversion to Reykjavik. The nature of the emergency prompting the diversion is not yet known.
05:00 UTC: Diversion to Reykjavik
United flight UA987 now appears to be operating under a normal squawk code, but has continued its diversion to Reykjavik. The aircraft is now on descent for an approach to Keflavik International Airport (KEF), passing through FL150.
Flight data shows that United flight UA987 made an on-time departure out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) at 1807 local time on 14 October. The flight had then proceeded normally, climbing to FL370 (37,000 feet) for the transatlantic crossing. The flight’s destination was Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).
During the cruise, flight crew initiated the diversion to Reykjavik.

Flight UA987 is now established on an approach to the diversion airport Keflavik (KEF). The aircraft conducting the UA987 long-haul service from Chicago is Boeing 787-10, registered N12004. This is a 5.7 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier United Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in January 2019.

Having initiated a diversion earlier this morning, United Airlines flight UA987 has now landed at Keflavik International Airport (KEF). The flight was originally bound for Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) from Chicago.
