A United Parcel Service (UPS) Boeing 767-300F operating the service to Louisville, KY returned to Spokane, WA after reporting a cargo fire indication on 23 October 2024.
UPS flight 5X2993 had conducted a departure from Spokane International Airport (GEG) and was outbound to Louisville International Airport (SDF).

As the aircraft established on track at flight level FL310, flight crew reported receiving a cargo fire indication. As a result, the operating crew elected to make a precautionary return to Spokane.
The aircraft landed without further incident on runway 21 Spokane International Airport. Flight crew conducted the return just under one hour after the flight’s initial departure.
Ground services conducted an inspection of the aircraft’s brakes after the landing.

Flight data shows that UPS flight 5X2993 had made a late departure out of Spokane on 23 October. The flight departed at 0648 local time, originally scheduled for 0543 local time.
After its departure the aircraft had set course normally, and had climbed to flight level FL310 on the outbound track. The flight crew initiated a return to Spokane and began an immediate descent at approximately 120 nautical miles from the city.
The aircraft conducting the 5X2993 service to Louisville International Airport was a Boeing 767-300F, registered N396UP. This is a 14.1-year-old widebody converted freighter aircraft belonging to the carrier United Parcel Service (UPS).
The aircraft has been in service with the operator since its conversion to freighter configuration in July 2022. Japan Airlines operated the aircraft in passenger configuration from its initial delivery from the factory in October 2010.
