Vistara-Air India Merger Heralds New Chapter in Indian Aviation

Today marks a milestone in the history of Indian aviation as Vistara, the joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, merges with Air India.

Today marks a significant milestone in the history of Indian aviation as Vistara, the joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, merges with Air India.

This strategic move aims to create a formidable global carrier, positioning India as a major player in the international aviation market.

Starting 12 November 2024, Air India will operate all Vistara aircraft. The merged Air India, with an extensive scale, promises to offer more travel choices with a larger fleet and a wider network to customers. 

The merger of Vistara and Air India brings together two individually strong brands; effectively becoming India’s sole full-service carrier.

By combining their resources, expertise, and extensive networks, the new entity is poised to offer enhanced passenger experiences, expanded connectivity, and world-class services.

Vistara: Operations to Date


Tata Sons Private Limited and Singapore Airlines Limited (SIA) formed a 51:49 joint venture, TATA SIA Airlines Limited, which operates under the brand name Vistara.

Vistara commenced its commercial operations on 9 January 2015 to set new standards in the aviation industry in India, and it today connects destinations across India and abroad.

The airline currently has a fleet of 70 aircraft, including 53 Airbus A320neo, 10 Airbus A321neo, and 7 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. It has flown more than 65 million customers since starting operations.

Vistara, India’s highest-rated airline on Skytrax and TripAdvisor, has won several ‘Best Airline’ awards. With a string of awards to its name, it has been lauded for world class service, exceptional cabin cleanliness and upholding high safety standards. 

Key Benefits of the Merger

Speaking about the historic merger earlier this year, Vistara’s Chief Executive Officer Vinod Kannan offered his gratitude to airline staff. He offered his heartfelt appreciation for the strong customer support throughout their decade long journey.

He pointed out that the merger’s primary focus is enhancing customer value through expanded fleet operations. It will also support broader network coverage, while maintaining exceptional service standards.

Kannan assured stakeholders of a smooth transition process as Vistara integrates with Air India,. He expressed his confidence for this new chapter in their corporate journey.

Air India’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson highlighted the extensive behind the scenes preparation. He noted that integrated teams from both airlines have collaborated extensively to ensure a smooth transition across all operational aspects. This applies across the board, from aircraft management to crew integration.

Wilson emphasized their commitment to delivering an enriched customer experience. This will be achieved through expanded routes, enhanced loyalty programs, and service excellence that combines the strengths of both airlines.

He articulated their vision of building a world-class airline that maintains its distinctive Indian identity while achieving global scale.
