Zurich Airport, Switzerland’s largest international airport, has reported impressive growth in passenger numbers for July 2024.

The airport serves as a major hub for Swiss International Air Lines and a key gateway to the Alpine nation. Suggestive of a continuing recovery and rebound since the pandemic, it witnessed a significant increase in traveler volume compared to the previous year.

Passenger Numbers Soar

In July 2024, Zurich Airport welcomed 3,105,953 passengers, marking a 7% increase from the same period last year.

This figure represents a remarkable recovery, reaching 99% of the passenger levels recorded in July 2019, before the global travel disruptions.

Local vs. Transfer Passengers

Of the total passengers, 2,235,983 were local travelers, while transfer passengers accounted for 28% (863,488) of the traffic.

This distribution highlights Zurich Airport’s dual role as both a final destination and a transit hub for international travelers.

Air Traffic Movements on the Rise

The airport recorded 24,617 take-offs and landings in July, a 4% increase compared to the previous year. While this figure stands at 96% of the 2019 level, it demonstrates a steady recovery in flight operations.

Improved Efficiency and Capacity

Zurich Airport showed improvements in operational efficiency:

  • Average passengers per flight increased to 144 (up 1% from last year)
  • Seat load factor rose to 85% (a 1 percentage point increase)

These figures indicate that airlines are optimizing their operations and flying with fuller planes.

Freight Volume Rebounds

The airport’s cargo operations also saw significant growth. In July, 37,021 tons of freight were transported, representing a substantial 23% increase compared to last year. However, this volume remains slightly below (-2%) the levels seen in July 2019.

Zurich Airport’s Strong Recovery

These statistics provide a snapshot of robust recovery and growth for Zurich Airport. As passenger numbers approach pre-pandemic levels, similarly its freight volumes are now indicating a rebound. The recovery in the freight sector is in line with other observations in the global air cargo sector.

Overall, the airport continues on a strong trajectory, and looks to strengthen its position as a key player in European aviation.

The positive trends in both passenger and cargo traffic bode well for the airport’s future, reflecting growing consumer confidence in air travel and the overall economic recovery of the region.
